Plastic: a huge environmental problem

Plastic pollution is today one of the most serious environmental emergencies for our Planet.

Plastic is a durable and indispensable material in some sectors, which has revolutionized people’s lives over the last 100 years. It is economical, versatile, and durable, so it’s widely used around the world, from bags to bottles and toys, to food containers to detergent bottles and insulating films. Its abuse, due to a lifestyle based on the concept of “disposable” and bad habits now rooted, has generated in recent decades a huge environmental problem. A substance that can potentially last for hundreds of years should not be used to create packaging designed to become an immediate waste.

The excessive production and consumption of disposable objects (bottles, containers and various wrappings) realeases millions of tons of solid waste into the environment. Pollution from plastic waste has reached all ecosystems: from natural aquatic and terrestrial to artificial agricultural, rural, urban and industrial.

Just think that the world production of plastic was almost zero in 1955, while half a century later, it reached 381 million tons (570 thousand end up in the Mediterranean). And it keeps rising. Plastic, in fact, is everywhere, even machines and planes are made of 50 percent plastic, and therefore reducing its use means changing almost every segment of our consumption.

On 14 January 2022, a new law on the reduction and use of plastic finally came into force: Decree 196 of 2021, published in the Official Journal number 285 of 30 November 2021, which provides for heavy fines for those who do not comply, from 2,500 to 25,000 euros. A path that already includes the next steps up to 2030. The reduction of plastic has finally entered the agenda of European governments and, in some ways, also in our lifestyles. But if we really want to reduce this waste, we have to be aware of three things. First, plastic will not disappear. Never. And not only for industrial interests, but also for its usefulness in so many functions. Second, its reduction cannot be delegated to laws and fines, even supranational ones. The rejection is in our hands. It is up to us to give up and replace the plastic, when and where it is necessary and possible. knowing that plastic waste, disposed of badly, is worth 80% of marine pollution and 50% of the garbage collected on the beaches. Third: alongside the elimination of single-use plastic, we must push for the recycling of plastic and therefore for the correct disposal (in Norway it reaches 97%) and for the innovation of biodegradable plastic (and here Italy is in the front row). It’s the combination of these three factors that can get us out of plastic prison.

The reduction in the use of plastic is therefore up to each of us. Starting from the exaggerated use we make for packaging. Glam1965 courageously carries on its green philosophy, based on respect for people and the environment. A step that looks to the present but also to the future, focusing on completely sustainable production choices.

Emergency in grocery shopping

When we get back from the supermarket and unpack, two-thirds of the load goes directly from the trunk to the separate collection bins.

It is very important to dispose of the waste in the correct way; this operation would be much easier if we were not submerged every day by: trays, bags, films, etc…

The overpackaging of super stores comes from our problem because most purchases are dictated by laziness, but it is also by those who encourage this approach, putting on the market mountains of unsustainable and polluting packaging.

The goal today is to eliminate what is not needed and to get closer and closer to sustainable brands and plastic free.

Excessive packaging

In online shopping, overpackaging reaches unthinkable levels. Most companies produce bulk packaging boxes at significantly lower cost than custom production in different sizes.

An oversized package compared to the items it contains takes up more space on the means of transport and creates avoidable waste.

Product packaging materials can also have a crucial aspect in manufacturing, as most companies use plastic packaging, which is one of the most dangerous environmental plagues in the world.

For every little effort, great results correspond! This is why Glam1965, a sustainable cosmetic brand and 100% Made in Italy, has drastically reduced plastic to 98% using mainly glass and aluminium packaging.

These two materials fully embrace the ecological cause: they do not pollute and are endlessly reusable. As for the storage of the product, they do not interact in the least with the contents of the bottle.

Finally, the packaging of finished and ready-to-ship products is reduced to the essentials, to avoid over-production and forms of waste.
