Many people have doubts about the “natural”, “organic”, “ecological” question. As in most cases, this happens because information is limited, bringing forward wrong prejudices that, we can say it, never come to anything. So, let’s start with some clarity.

Although in the last few years consumers are much more attentive to beauty, some confusion still reigns over natural cosmetics: why? Of course, because of language.
Terms such as “natural”, “organic”, “ecobio”, “eco-friendly”, “phytocosmetics” and “vegetable” are often mistaken for synonyms, buy they really are different.

When we talk about “natural cosmetics”, we are referring to the big general hat within which both natural and eco-bio and organic products fall. Natural cosmetics are generally all those formulated with ingredients derived from plant extracts avoiding chemical or synthetic processes. A product, in order to be defined “natural”, should be free (or contain a very low concentration) of substances considered unhealthy or non-biodegradable, such as silicone derivatives and petrochemicals.

However, when we talk about “eco-bio cosmetics”, we always talk about cosmetics formulated with vegetable raw materials, but from organic farming and so extracted with non-polluting methods and derived from renewable sources. So, the main difference, lies in the method of processing.

In these products the attention to ecology is also revealed in the packaging, always and entirely realized by recycled and biodegradable materials.

The natural cosmetics market has evolved from a niche market to one that is accessible to anyone with a desire for change. So, people who decide to buy natural products are not only followers of the classic “green fashion”, but are also aware people willing to inform themselves.

So, today the motivations that push consumers to buy these products do not depend on the price nor on promotions, but on the ingredients of the products sold. They give the right importance to what a product contains, to the quality of ingredients, to the history behind a brand, to a sustainable lifestyle, to a philosophy and values that they feel close to themselves.

But, then, why choose natural cosmetics?

I will not make a list based on the degree of importance of the reasons for choosing natural producst; everyone has their own range of values to draw on and be inspired by. I will try to express, objectively and concisely, the pros of this choice.

First of all, the skin. Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in our body? It absorbs up to 60% of the substances we decide to apply daily on its most superficial layer. Therefore, this data should make us think about how important is to consciously choose what we decide to apply on the face, legs, arms and on the whole body. An organic cosmetic is an ally of the skin, it moisturizes, nourishes, cared for and accompanies it to improve day by day. On the contrary, a cosmetic rich in petrolatum and chemicals derivatives, deceives us into thinking we are allies when in fact it is only making things worse, occluding pores and leaving an “illusory” patina, above which everything looks beautiful, but under which nothing has changed.

Anyway, it is very important to choose the right product according to your skin type, paying attention to the label containing the ingredients (technically the INCI).

Moreover, choosing natural products means choosing the environment. Approaching this kind of purchase is a small-big step to the awarness and to the desire to improve the world in which we live, take care to the environment and to those who populate it, regardless of people, animals, plants etc.

Choosing natural products is not only a skin’s matter; choosing natural products is a matter that concerns everyone and that could really bring improvements to the whole world.

Choosing natural and organic products means choosing to use less polluting plastic, as well as using recycled and recyclable materials. Choosing natural products means helping both sea and ocean’s water to remain clean, helping those who populate it to live life as they should, without the risk of dying inside it.

Choosing natural products means choosing change, it means looking ahead and hoping for a better place where we can feel good each other and with the total environment around us.

The trip is very long, but in small steps we can decide to make the biggest difference.
